How to use Google to track everything you want to watch

Create the ultimate watchlist with Google You can do a lot more with Google on the web than you might have thought - in addition to the classic search function (now with additional AI support), you can perform conversions and calculations, flip a coin, roll a dice, get definitions, look up locations on maps, and more. Another feature you might not have discovered yet: you can create a watchlist for movies and TV series.

Of course, there are many platforms where you can save such lists, but it is particularly convenient to save films and series online as you search. Another advantage: your watchlist is automatically synchronized across all devices on which you use Google and Google TV.

Add movies and series

Adding movies and TV shows to your Google Watchlist is easy: open a browser, go to Google, log in and search for the title you want. The search engine automatically recognizes when you are looking for a movie or series and displays a "I want to see" link in the right-hand panel. Clicking it saves the title to your Watchlist.

There's a lot more to explore on these search results pages, and Google has steadily expanded the options that appear alongside the movie and TV results over the years. For example, you'll see ratings from IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes, as well as information about where the content can be streamed. By clicking "Edit Services," you can tell Google which streaming services (like Netflix and Prime Video) you're subscribed to.

If you want to remove a title from your watchlist, just click "Want to watch" again to deselect it. There's also a "Already watched" option, but so far this feature doesn't have much of a meaning - there's no section in Google where you can view all the movies and series marked as "watched". You can even mark titles as "Want to watch" and "Already watched" at the same time.

If you're looking for something other than a movie or TV show - for example, "Empire of the Sun" or "Rounders" - you may need to adjust your search. Add "movie" or "TV show" to your query if Google doesn't immediately understand what you're looking for, or look for a link above the search results that will take you to the right page.

Find your watchlist

Even though Google doesn't keep a list of what you've watched, you can always see the list of what you still want to watch: Just go to any Google search box, be it on the web, on the home screen of an Android device, or anywhere else. As long as you're logged into your Google account, you can search for "my watchlist."

This will then show you a list of all the titles you've previously saved from Google search results. However, you can't do much with this list other than watch it - for example, you can't mark anything as "watched" or leave ratings, as you can on services like Letterboxd.

However, you can click or tap on a specific title to go back to Google search results for that movie or TV show, including ratings and streaming options. Once you've watched something, you can click "I want to watch" to deselect it. There's also a "People also searched for" box, which can be useful if you're looking for more recommendations.

This watchlist is especially useful if you have a TV with Google TV or a Chromecast with Google TV (or maybe you want to get the Google TV streamer). Your watchlist will be synced here and displayed under the "Library" section in the user interface. It links directly to the streaming services you have installed.
